Low Calorie Diet

With all the many options for weight loss that are available, those people who are in a hurry to drop weight are more likely to opt for a low calorie diet. These are diets that allow between 800 and 1,500 calories a day. Any diet which allows less than 800 calories a day is considered a very low calorie diet.  It should only be used in cases where it is necessary for the individual to lose weight drastically as preparation for medical procedures and supervised by a physician.

The distinction between these two diets is that the low calorie diet still provides your body with the nutrients required for it to perform all of its needed functions. This is also different than a starvation diet which limits your consumption to little or no solid foods without concern for nutrition. When choosing a low calories diet there are two different approaches you can take.

 1.  Counting Calories, Not Nutrition

Many people feel that all calories are created equal.  Thus, as long as you eat only the minimum number allowed, you will lose weight without having to give up your favorite foods. While weight loss may be your primary goal, nutrition should always be an important consideration. You need to have the right ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fat in your diet to keep your body functioning. You will also need enough fiber to ensure that your digestive tract stays healthy.

If you think a low calorie diet will work just as well for you if you eat a plate full of cookies twice a day and nothing more, then you are asking for problems. Empty calories are those found in most sweets and junk foods.  They offer little or no nutritional value.

2.  Eating a Healthy Low Calorie Diet

You can eat the same number of calories each day with healthier food choices and benefit more in every way. Consider the fiber you will get from eating whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Not only does fiber help your digestive tract do its job, it also makes you feel fuller so you don’t get hungry as easily after you eat. A salad with green leafy vegetables before a meal can help you feel full and keep you from over-eating other food choices. These are also the types of foods that you will need to eat in order to get necessary vitamins and minerals.

3. Other Considerations with a Low Calorie Diet

You will find guides online for how many calories you will need to eat in order to lose weight according to your individual circumstances. You should use one that differentiates amongst people who exercise frequently, moderately, or not at all. This is important since calories will serve as your energy source for any type of activity.

The ratio of fat, carbohydrates, and protein may also shift somewhat depending on the activities you will do. For instance, if you are strength training to build muscle at the same time you are trying to lose weight, you may need to eat more protein which is necessary to build muscle.

Not all professionals believe that a low calorie diet is the best option for weight loss for most people. However, it is up to you to make it a healthy choice by choosing to get your calories from the right types of food.
