Low Carb Diet

A low carb diet is one which limits the number of carbohydrates you eat so that your body burns stored fat for energy instead of the carbs it usually relies on. The Atkins Diet is a popular low carb diet which has gotten both criticism and praise for its method of weight loss and many people have lost large amounts of weight by following this plan.

Many experts believe that this is an unhealthy way to lose weight since you are consuming large quantities of fatty foods which they believe is bad for your health. Proponents of the diet, on the other hand, claim that studies have shown that glucose, insulin, and cholesterol levels will improve with the diet. Here are some of the benefits associated with a low carb diet:

• Fast weight loss – the two week induction period will often produce weight loss of approximately one pound per day.

• Ability to maintain weight loss – during weight loss, you will determine the amount of carbs you can eat each day to prevent you from gaining weight. This makes it easier to maintain your weight and keep it at the same level for life.

• Health benefits – for those who are predisposed to diabetes, a low carb diet can help prevent you from developing the disease. With the right food choices, you can also lower your bad cholesterol levels and help reduce your chances of cardiovascular disease.

• No hungry feeling – when you limit the amount of carbs you eat, you will balance your glucose and insulin levels and help reduce cravings. Also, foods which contain high levels of protein are more filling. Combined with the fact that there are no real restrictions as to how much you are allowed to eat, this means you don’t have to worry about feeling hungry!

There are basically three different types of carbs and not all of them are recommended foods on a low carb diet. Simple carbohydrates are those found in white breads, white pasta, and sweets. They are also the ones which trigger the fastest release of insulin, which can throw your system out of balance. It is best to completely eliminate simple carbohydrates from your diet.

Complex carbohydrates are those found in vegetables and whole grains. You should get all of your carb servings from complex carbohydrates. They are digested more slowly than simple carbohydrates and are packed full of nutrients.

Fiber is also a carbohydrate.  The grams of fiber that are in a food will be subtracted from the total number of carbs and are not considered part of your daily carb allowance. Fiber does not work the same as other carbs and is an important nutrient for digestion. Raw vegetables are often high in fiber as well as complex carbohydrates. This makes them the ideal food choice for a low carb diet.

You should also keep in mind that not all fats are created equally. Use olive oil to cook foods, and eat nuts and seeds as snacks or garnishes to get healthy fats which your body needs. While the medical community continues to believe a low carb diet can have negative long-term effects on your health, many studies have shown otherwise. Making the healthiest choices for your fats and proteins will help you achieve successful weight loss without the associated risk of too many unhealthy fats!
