There are more products on the market than ever before, each promising to deliver the best results for quick weight loss. The ingredients used in these products are as trendy as the newest fashions with each taking its turn at popularity before giving way to the next great discovery. One important fact to keep in mind is that the ingredients and quality of weight loss products aren’t regulated like other types of drugs.  Also, purchasing from an unfamiliar company can be dangerous in itself.

Herbs have been used for many years to cause quick weight loss and most people assume that anything natural has to be safe. However, herbs can be just as strong as other types of medications and thus prone to interacting with other medicines you may be taking. Additionally, new ingredients that have come from other countries may have had little research; side effects or interactions may not be known.

Following are some of the more popular "natural" ingredients used in weight loss products today:

• Pomegranate – This fruit has been around for a long time and it is packed full of nutrients. It is also used as a “detoxifying agent” to eliminate toxins from the body. Suddenly, it has become more popular for its ability to aid in quick weight loss and can be found in a variety of products, often in combination with other ingredients like green tea or acai berry. Although pomegranates are nutritious, they have not been shown to have any effect on weight loss.

• Acai Berries – Much like the pomegranate, the Acai berry is a fruit rich in nutrients, particularly a high concentration of antioxidants. This Brazilian berry is newer to the scene than the pomegranate but skeptics say there is no evidence that the Acai berry will contribute to quick weight loss.

• Green Tea – The benefits of drinking green tea are nothing new to Asians who have enjoyed the beverage for many centuries. Unlike some of the common ingredients in weight loss products today, preliminary research has shown green tea may be able to block fat and keep you from gaining weight. In tests, mice that consumed green tea had less fat in the liver and also had lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Although you can find green tea in combination with other ingredients for quick weight loss, you may also choose to drink it as regular tea by itself.

• Hoodia – This is another natural ingredient which has been used for centuries in Africa but is still fairly new to the U.S.  Hoodia Gordonii comes from a plant and was eaten by tribesmen in Africa while they were on hunting trips to stave off hunger. While there are numerous other species of Hoodia, only Hoodia Gordonii works as a natural appetite suppressant.

While many people have gotten good results from using Hoodia to help control appetite, there have been no studies in the U.S. to ensure its safety. While African tribesmen have used it for years without side effects, there is still the concern of drug interactions for those who are on regular medications.

If you feel you need to rely on supplements for quick weight loss, stick to those which have been proven both beneficial and safe. Opt for single ingredients rather than those with two or more mixed together.  This will minimize your risk of side effects and also help you determine which products give you the best results!
