• Fad diets – People continue to come up with all types of bizarre diets that are guaranteed to produce rapid weight loss. Plans like the Cabbage Soup Diet or the Apple Diet where you eat mostly the same food and nothing else is never a good idea. You are going to get only the nutrients provided by that one food.  Your body isn’t going to differentiate between the calories you are eating with a single food instead of a combination of other healthier choices.

• Diet supplements – This is one of the fastest growing areas of the weight loss market with each new product promising more rapid weight loss than the one before. Some of these products contain stimulants that speed up your metabolism and which can also have negative effects on your health.

• Body wraps – Body wraps are used in some fitness clubs and spas.  They involved  elastic "bandages" which are soaked in special solutions and then wrapped firmly around your body. While wraps are used by some people for rapid weight loss, this is not a method which is long lasting. It works in much the way that wrapping a rubber band around your finger will leave an indentation for a period of time.

While many of the methods used for rapid weight loss actually are effective to some degree, they are outweighed by the risks they impose on your body. Dehydration, vitamin deficiencies, electrolyte imbalances, and even gallstones are common side effects of losing weight too quickly.

If you want to use one of these methods for rapid weight loss to get ready for a special occasion, limit yourself to a short period of time in order to minimize your risk for side effects. The best approach to weight loss is to increase the fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet and cut out the junk food. This way, you will lose weight safely and improve your health at the same time!
